"Is manuka honey good for your stomach?" is one of the questions we hear most. Some people take a spoonful on an empty stomach every morning, others have heard it helps with H. pylori or the gut. But what does the research actually say? Here's an honest look at what's proven and what isn't yet, how to take it, and which grade to choose.
The Quick Answer
- Is manuka honey good for the stomach? Lab and animal studies are encouraging, but human studies are still few. Many of our customers use it for their stomach and notice a real difference. If your doctor has prescribed treatment, keep taking it and have the honey alongside, not instead.
- Which grade? For the stomach we recommend MGO 400+ and above: MGO 400+ at BHD 19, and MGO 573+ at BHD 28. The higher the grade, the stronger and faster it works.
- How? One dessert spoon on an empty stomach in the morning, up to three a day before meals.

Why Manuka Honey Specifically?
All honey has some antibacterial properties, but real manuka honey contains a natural compound called MGO (methylglyoxal) at levels you won't find in any other honey. It's stable and isn't easily broken down by heat or the body's enzymes. The higher the MGO number on the jar, the stronger the honey. That's why most stomach research has focused on manuka honey in particular.
What Do the Studies Say? (Honestly)
1) H. pylori: In the lab, studies found manuka honey stopped H. pylori from growing, even at low concentrations, which is why it's become one of the most popular natural options people turn to. Many of our customers take it alongside their H. pylori treatment and say it helped, especially at MGO 400+ and above. Human studies are still few, so make it part of your treatment, not a replacement for it.
2) Stomach ulcers: Animal studies found manuka honey helped protect the stomach lining, thanks to its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory effect. There isn't enough human research yet to confirm this.
3) The colon: Animal studies also found manuka honey reduced inflammation in the colon. As for bloating and IBS: there are no human studies yet, but our customers who regularly suffer from bloating tell us manuka honey eases it.
4) Good gut bacteria: Honey contains natural sugars that feed beneficial bacteria, and lab studies found manuka honey supports them. It's one reason many people notice a difference in their digestion.
5) Acid reflux and heartburn: There are no clear studies on manuka honey and reflux. Some people find its thick texture soothing, but we can't say it treats it.
The bottom line: pure manuka honey is a natural food that supports stomach and digestive health. Early research is encouraging, and our customers see a clear difference, especially with higher grades. But it's no substitute for a doctor if the pain is severe or ongoing.
How to Take Manuka Honey for Your Stomach
This is what we recommend to our customers, using a dessert spoon (bigger than a teaspoon, smaller than a tablespoon):
- Daily routine: Take one dessert spoon on an empty stomach in the morning, about 15 minutes before breakfast.
- For extra support: One dessert spoon before breakfast, one before lunch and one before dinner. Keep this up until you feel better, then drop to two spoons, then one in the morning.
- Let it melt in your mouth, or stir it into warm (not hot) water, as boiling water affects the honey's quality.
- Don't mix it into very hot drinks or cook with it.
If the pain is ongoing or severe, see a doctor.
Empty Stomach or After Food?
Most people take it on an empty stomach, so it reaches the stomach while it's empty. If your stomach is sensitive first thing in the morning, have it with a light snack or after breakfast instead. That's fine too.
Best Manuka Honey for the Stomach: Which Grade?
| Use | Grade | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point for the stomach | Manuka Health MGO 400+ (250g) | BHD 19 |
| Starting point (better value) | Manuka Health MGO 400+ (500g) | BHD 33 |
| Stronger for less | Haddrell's MGO 573+ (UMF 16+) | BHD 23 |
| Stronger (best seller) | Manuka Health MGO 573+ (250g) | BHD 28 |
| Faster results | Manuka Health MGO 850+ (UMF 20+) | BHD 45 |
| Highest strength | Haddrell's MGO 1200+ (UMF 25+) | BHD 50 |
Why does the grade matter? MGO is what gives manuka honey its strength, so the higher the number, the stronger and faster it works. That's why we recommend MGO 400+ and above for the stomach. Most lab studies on the stomach also used high-grade manuka honey. Jars labelled just "Manuka Honey", with no MGO or UMF number, may contain very little MGO. We explain the difference in our MGO and UMF guide.

When Should You See a Doctor?
Honey is no substitute for medical care. See a doctor if:
- You have severe stomach pain, or pain lasting more than two weeks.
- You vomit blood or have black stools.
- You're losing weight for no reason, or find it hard to swallow.
- You have ongoing burning or pain in your stomach, so you can get tested for H. pylori.
Important Notes
- Diabetes: Manuka honey is a natural sugar, so ask your doctor about the right amount.
- Babies under one year: must not be given any kind of honey, including Manuka.
- Allergies: avoid it if you're allergic to honey or bees.
- If you're on medication: Keep taking it, and check with your doctor before adding honey.
