How to Tell Real Manuka Honey: 6 Signs, Plus How to Use and Store It

Manuka tree flower in New Zealand, the source of real Manuka honey

Because Manuka honey is expensive and in demand, there are fake, blended or falsely labelled products out there. These are the key signs of real, pure Manuka honey to check before you buy, plus tips on using and storing it so you get the most from every spoonful.

6 Signs of Real Manuka Honey

1. A clear number: MGO or UMF

The jar must show MGO with a number (like 263+) or UMF with a number (like 10+). Words like “Active” or “Bio Active” without a number mean nothing. Learn the difference in our MGO and UMF guide.

2. Original Manuka honey is produced and packed in New Zealand

Original Manuka honey is produced and packed in New Zealand. Look for “Packed in New Zealand” or “Product of New Zealand” on the label.

3. A known brand and a batch number

Genuine jars show the producer's name, abatch number, and an expiry date. Some brands let you verify the batch on their website.

4. A UMF licence

If the jar carries the UMF logo, it comes with the company's licence number from the UMF Honey Association (UMFHA) in New Zealand.

5. A sensible price

If you find high-grade Manuka honey at a suspiciously low price, something is probably wrong. High grades are rare, and the price reflects that.

6. Texture and taste

Manuka honey is thicker and denser than regular honey, with a dark golden-brown colour and a strong taste with a slight bitterness. It's also normal for it to crystallise a little over time.

How to Use Real Manuka Honey

  • One teaspoon on an empty stomach in the morning, or before bed.
  • Don't add it to very hot drinks. Let your tea or milk cool until it's warm, then stir it in.
  • Use a clean, dry wooden, plastic or stainless steel spoon, and never put a wet spoon in the jar.
  • Spread it on toast, stir it into yoghurt or oats, or enjoy it straight from the spoon.

How to Store It

  • Room temperature, away from sunlight and heat. Don't keep it next to the oven or in the car.
  • No need for the fridge. The fridge makes it crystallise and harden faster.
  • Close the lid tightly after each use so no moisture gets in.
  • If it crystallises, stand the jar in warm (not hot) water for a little while until it turns runny again.

FAQs

Does crystallisation mean the Manuka honey isn't real?

No. Crystallisation is natural in raw honey and happens faster in cooler weather. It doesn't affect the quality.

How long does it last once opened?

Stored properly, it lasts until the expiry date on the jar, but it's best used within a year of opening.

Which grade should I buy?

It depends on how you'll use it. See our guide to choosing a Manuka honey grade.
